DAVID ROLDÁN, FUNDAP Environmental

David is a 26-year-old from a rural community whose connection to the land began in childhood. The image of his grandfather sowing with dedication left a lasting impression on him. Though David had no formal training, he experimented with crops and was always seeking ways to improve. That humble yet determined approach to working the land inspired him to follow the same path.

Before meeting FUNDAP, he was already growing vegetables and raising animals. However, his practices relied heavily on chemical products, which he later came to understand were harmful to the environment. That realization led him to join one of FUNDAP’s agricultural training programs.

From that point on, his way of farming completely changed. He learned to make organic fertilizers, pesticides, and fungicides; he acquired techniques for managing seedbeds, pruning, and grafting—and most importantly, he discovered that it was possible to increase production without harming the environment.

Thanks to technical support and the knowledge he gained, David left behind the excessive use of chemicals. Today, he farms more consciously and sustainably—and the results are clear: biodiversity has returned to his land. “We used to never see bees; now they’re everywhere,” he says joyfully.

His plot has become a productive and diverse space. He grows jalapeño peppers, chiltepe, coffee, and fruit trees. Together with his family, he has also developed a nursery for medicinal and ornamental plants.

The most significant turning point came in 2023, when he fully embraced forestry and environmental practices. He began working with seedbeds for timber trees and medicinal plants, aware that these actions not only improve his production but also create a positive impact in his community.

Since then, he has distributed nearly 1,000 plants of different tree species, actively contributing to reforestation efforts in Guatemala. What began as a natural evolution of his growth as a farmer has now become a source of pride and commitment. “I feel happy because we are responsible for reforestation here in Guatemala,” he affirms.

The training he received has also allowed him to generate employment and improve his income. Although he faced challenges—like learning how to protect his health while working or finding channels to sell his products—David has adapted and moved forward. He is currently studying Agronomy and has a clear goal: to build a sustainable business that not only produces healthy food, but also creates jobs and protects the environment.

For David, FUNDAP has not only provided technical support—it has been an opportunity for personal and community transformation. As he puts it: “FUNDAP has been a great opportunity for growth.”
