Santos Lool Torres has dedicated over 17 years to FUNDAP, where he currently works as a Forestry Technician in the Environmental Program. His mission: to train voluntary agroforestry and environmental promoters, provide technical assistance in rural communities, and follow up on forest management plans as part of the efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.
His passion for fieldwork and commitment to ecological production systems have helped generate local employment and self-employment, strengthen a culture of environmental conservation, and promote sustainable production improvements in southwestern Guatemala.
One of his most meaningful experiences has been the collaborative creation of forest studies with beneficiaries to enroll in the forest management incentive program—demonstrating that teamwork can restore ecosystems and improve the income of many families.
Santos dreams of expanding forest protection coverage in areas vulnerable to climate change and continuing to offer high-quality services that address the agricultural and environmental needs of rural communities.
“Protecting forests is everyone’s responsibility, because they provide a wide range of ecosystem services,” he affirms with conviction. His story reflects the quiet but powerful impact FUNDAP creates by caring for the land and empowering those who cultivate and protect it.
