My name is Shirley Castillo. I’m originally from Guatemala City and I currently live in the department of Huehuetenango. I make and sell chocolates, creative stationery, and crafts; I also run a small bookstore as part of my business.
Before connecting with FUNDAP, I earned my income through catalog sales — an activity that allowed me to support my family, though with limited opportunities for growth. It was at one of the meetings related to that work that I first heard about FUNDAP’s programs and the trainings they offered. That information caught my attention, since it answered my need to strengthen my knowledge and improve my opportunities.
During that same period, I went through a difficult time marked by the loss of my father — a situation that deeply impacted my personal and emotional life. Even so, my family’s support was essential in getting through that moment and moving forward. From that point on, I decided to take up my productive activities again, focusing on making chocolates for special occasions and gradually incorporating new ideas to innovate and improve the quality of my products.
Later on, I learned about the Village Banking methodology, which gave me access to financing to strengthen my business. Through this process, I also received support to improve administrative management — especially in tracking income, expenses, and investment. This learning has been key to making more informed decisions and giving greater stability to my business.
Likewise, this experience has given me the opportunity to share with other women, encouraging them to take advantage of the training and growth options available to improve their living conditions and those of their families.
As a result of this process, I was able to identify new opportunities in my area. I saw the need for a bookstore in my neighborhood, which motivated me to expand my business. With the support of the financing I received, I took the step toward opening my bookstore, also adding creative stationery and craft products, which allowed me to diversify and strengthen my economic activity.
Over these 14 years, I have learned that effort, perseverance, and willingness to learn are essential to reach your goals. My experience shows that, with the right opportunities and personal commitment, it is possible to bring about positive and sustainable change.
Today, in addition to continuing to strengthen my business, I remain committed to motivating other women to seek opportunities for growth and development, promoting entrepreneurship as a way to improve quality of life at both the family and community level.
